What is business coaching?

The word coach comes from the French — a vehicle for transporting people from one place to another.

Coaching is a collaborative process involving self-discovery, goal setting and strategic actions, designed to help you create exceptional results. Through the process of coaching, you will deepen your learning, improve your performance, and enhance your quality of life. Coaching transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary and the result is alchemical.

What is coaching used for?
• Achieve greater levels of influence and impact
• Assess competencies, and uncover blind spots
• Improve 360º performance review results
• Develop skills, and change behaviours
• Improve leadership, or management skills
• Enhance customer service
• Navigate change
• Provide clarity and insight
• Clarify and articulate vision, mission and purpose
• Innovate: Turn ideas into action
• Influence for impact
• Design a desirable work/life balance

While training and facilitation can produce powerful results, coaching provides the missing components to creating lasting change: Accountability and commitment. Transformation occurs more readily when organizations include coaching, to support leaders and teams to follow-up and follow-through.

One study examined the effects of executive coaching amongst managers in the public sector. Training — which included goal setting, collaborative problem solving, practice, and feedback, — increased productivity by 22.4%. Training and coaching increased productivity by 88%. (Public Personnel Management; Winter 1997; Olivero, Bane and Kopelman)

How does coaching work?

Most individual coaching takes place by phone, and most group coaching is done in person.

The coaching conversation
• asks thought-provoking questions
• helps you define your aspirations and challenges
• challenges you to go beyond where you thought you could go.
• lets you see yourself or a situation in a fresh (useful) new way

Coaching concentrates on where you are now, where you want to be, and what you are willing to do, to achieve the results you want. As a coach I encourage you and celebrate with you along the way. I also hold you responsible and accountable for your progress. The results you achieve depend on your intentions, choices, commitment and actions.

What value can coaching bring to your life?
• Improved relationships (personal, professional and volunteer)
• Increased creativity, productivity and efficiency in teams
• Improved communications with diverse personality styles
• Increased income and more free time

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

Therapy focuses on relieving psychological pain and treating cognitive or emotional disorders. While therapy helps heal the past, coaching starts with the present, and seeks to help healthy clients design a more desirable future.

What are the benefits of coaching?

Coaching accelerates your progress, by providing you with greater awareness, and focus. What value can coaching bring to your life?:
  • Improved relationships (personal, professional and volunteer)
  • Amplified creativity, productivity and efficiency in teams
  • Create the basis for planning career advancement
  • Increased income
  • Enriched quality of life
  • Overcome creative blocks and complete a special project (i.e. write a book, build a boat, perform in a play)
